Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Forsyth Park?

Forsyth Park is one of Savannah’s most iconic elopement spots. Its moss-draped oaks, historic charm, and the famous Forsyth Fountain make it a dream location. But do you need a Forsyth Park elopement permit to get married here?

Good news: No permit is required for elopements! Savannah’s public parks are open for elopements without any paperwork or fees. That makes Forsyth Park an easy and affordable choice for couples wanting a stress-free ceremony.

NOTE: If you are having a micro-wedding (between 21-40 guests), we do require that you have a permit – AND it’s included in your package, so we take care of getting it for you!

However, even if you are eloping, and you aren’t required to have a permit – there’s still one thing to keep in mind…

What If Someone Is in Your Ceremony Spot?

Since Forsyth Park is public, ceremony spots are first-come, first-served. That means you can’t reserve a specific location unless you apply for a permit. If you arrive and find someone in your chosen spot, you may need to adjust last minute.

But don’t stress! Forsyth Park has plenty of beautiful spots to choose from.

Amanda + Orlando’s Elopement

Amanda + Orlando originally planned to say their vows 20 feet to the left of where they ended up. But when they arrived, that area was already occupied by a picnic. Instead of worrying, they just moved slightly over—and as you can see, their ceremony was just as magical! The fountain, oak trees, and dreamy Savannah light made for an unforgettable backdrop.

Jordan + Peter’s Elopement

And this couple originally planned to elope at our “Under the Oaks” spot, which was taken by another event. So they moved a short distance away to our gorgeous “Corner Oak” ceremony location!

Tips for a Smooth Forsyth Park Elopement

To keep your elopement stress-free, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Arrive early. If you have a specific location in mind and want to ensure you get it, consider sending one of your guests over early to hold the space.
  • Be flexible. If your first choice isn’t available, there are plenty of stunning alternatives! Trust your photographer to choose a nearby location with an equally beautiful background.
  • Choose a quiet time. Mornings and weekdays tend to have fewer crowds.
  • Keep it intimate. Large setups aren’t allowed without a permit, so a non-permitted Forsyth Park wedding works best for small elopements.

Stress-Free Eloping in Forsyth Park

Eloping is all about keeping things simple, and Forsyth Park makes that easy. With no permits required and countless beautiful spots, you can focus on celebrating your love instead of dealing with logistics.

Want a truly stress-free experience? The Savannah Elopement Package includes everything you need—photography, florals, an officiant, hair & makeup, and even a cake! Just show up, say “I do,” and celebrate the beginning of your marriage adventure.

What if We Want to Get a Permit Just for Peace of Mind?

No problem! You can either add that on when you book your elopement package (and bonus: since we’re local, we get a resident discount on the permit through the city—which saves you money!), or you can take care of getting it yourself – and you can see our guide to the Savannah park permit process here.

What About Micro Weddings in Forsyth Park?

If you’re planning a micro wedding in Forsyth Park instead of an elopement, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered there, too. When you book our Micro Wedding Package, we take care of the getting the permit and booking your security guard—so you can simply enjoy the moment without worrying about city paperwork.
